Cape Wrath Ultra 2024 Paintings
Coming soon

Welcome to the Gallery

Welcome to my gallery. I'm a contemporary landscape artist with a passion for painting the mountains where I compete in major ultrarunning races. These are often remote areas with stunning vistas. The paintings are full of energy and emotion that captures the turbulence of the weather as well as of my physical and mental state during these brutal races.

I have also added a collection of countryside animals that I often meet along the way. They lift the spirits and keep me sane when all I have is my own company.

Durham is my home and where a lot of my training is based and so I have included here a collection of pen and ink cityscapes too.

I hope that you enjoy them.

Gallery Collections

Modern impressionist mountain landscape painting of Blencathra in The Lake District. Atmospheric broad brishstrokes sweeping over the summit in blues and white with the steep craggy drop from the peak, in browns, oranges, blues and whites. Swirling and blurring of the colours to reflect the windy and stormy conditions.

Ultra Mountains - acrylic on canvas on

This collection contains my most recent work.  It is inspired by my love of running and racing in remote and mountainous terrain. The transient, ever changing and powerful nature of these images is translated through my use of colour and brushstrokes.  They capture the power and beauty of these wild environments in which I absorb myself for days.  They remind us of our human instinct to explore, our sense of freedom and our relative insignificance against the immensity of the natural world.

'Beyond the Fringe'. A highland cow modern impressionist portrait painting in vibrant reds, oranges and turquoisheavy fringe falling over it's face and all of it in a blur of bold brushstrokes.

UltraAnimals - acrylic on canvas

A selection of amusing animals frequently seen on the fells and farms that bring a smile to my face adding a spring to my step and sometimes making me spring over a wall or fence to escape.

First rule of running 'Don't get dead......or fall in a cowpat!'

Fowlers Yard, Durham. A beautiful riverside nook in Durham city centre with artisan art and craft shops and cafe. Drawn in black ink looking up the street to the shops and studios. Accent colours added in turquoise to doorways and in red to the tile rooftops.

Durham City Ink

I love Durham. I have lived here for the past 12 years, have studio here and have great friends in the area including many through my running club, Elvet Striders.

In these pieces, I use pen and ink with some elements of collage and digital techniques to create a contemporary perspective on the classic buildings, structures and views of this beautiful city that I see every day when running and on relaxing rest days.

'I Can't Feel My Face When I'm With You'

"When Elaine told me she was also a painter, I felt sure I would be a fan of her work. I felt a strong connection with many of her pieces because so many of the mountains and hills are familiar to me. When I saw this print, I knew I’d found the one. It reminds me of the Lakeland Fells, which I know well and love. The colours conjure up the sensations of the coldness and darkness of winter. This particular spot is special to me, as it reminds me of fleeting glances of Helvellyn on my Bob Graham Round. This print has pride of place on our living room wall. I love it!"
